Saidar
February 5, 2009 – 9:01 pmIf you are using Debian/Ubuntu and looking for a tool which enables you to view live system statistics then you probably want to give saidar a whirl:
sudo apt-get install saidar
Saidar shows you real-time CPU, processes, load, memory, swap, network I/O, disk I/O, and file system information through a curses interface much like top. You can colourise the output by using the -c option. This will result in fields being shown in different colours, with them emphasized in bold or reverse video when they hit certain thresholds. Check the manpage for details.

Bibble 5 Preview Released
February 4, 2009 – 9:19 pmI have been using Bibble4 as my primary raw processing software for about 2 years now. Like many others, I have been eagerly awaiting the release of Bibble5 and was bitterly disappointed when the release was postponed back in December. At the time Bibblelabs promised to release a preview version of Bibble5 before the end of January – and they have been true to their word….but only just!
As soon as I heard about the release I had to have a play. It runs fairly stabley on my Ubuntu 8.10 64bit system, despite many users on the Bibble forums complaining of problems.
The preview showcases several new features to Bibble5, most notably selective editing, layers, multi-image view, asset management and versioning. One more feature to add to the list is performance. Bibblelabs have long been touting the speed of the new version – and it does indeed feel FAST!! The new features, along with the much more polished interface, mean that Bibble5 will be a vast improvement over 4 – and that’s saying something as 4 is a great piece of software.
The preview is missing far too many features to be truly useful in production, but it shows great promise for the future. My one gripe would be that despite the performance and polished interface, it still feels a long way from finished. That is mainly due to the number of disabled and missing features. Though, considering many were left out because Bibblelabs felt they just weren’t ready for the big time, it is a bit of a worry as to when the final version will be released – here’s hoping that we wont be kept waiting too long.

Photoblog
January 10, 2009 – 1:32 amUgh!! Photoblog isn’t free anymore. They’ve brought in a Pro account system since I last visited. There is still a free version but it only allows 5 uploads per day (it used to be 20), and it is plastered in adverts. I suppose it was only a matter of time. Guess I’ll be sticking with Flickr for most of my photos then.
I preferred Photoblog because it seemed more personal and you always got more feedback, probably because there were (are) far fewer users, but Flickr has more functionality. I’ll probably still upload some stuff there, but…..Oh! well, it was good while it lasted
Flock, first impressions
January 6, 2009 – 9:52 pmPosting this from Flock, which, if you haven’t heard, is a browser geared towards the ’social web’. It’s got an integrated blog poster, to write and post stuff direct to your blog – I’m using it now funnily enough. It has sidebars for Facebook, Flickr and MySpace, as well as others – so you can be wasting your time without even navigating away from the page you’re supposed to be reading. The built in Feed Reader is pretty cool, but there’s no Last.fm as yet. It’s based on Firefox so it’s not too different – in fact I was hoping it would be a little more innovative than it is.
Still, we’ll see how it goes….

TermLauncher Applet 0.0.3
January 27, 2008 – 1:22 pm
This is a bug fix release which fixes an issue with the applet not shutting down cleanly when a user logs off. I’ve also cleaned up the source package to allow an Ubuntu package to be created – thanks to Mitsuya Shibata.
